Save the Planet, take a boat

Narrowboat holidays may be some of the most environmentally friendly breaks, but one boat hire company is going even greener.

UK boat hire, which owns Alvechurch, Red Line, Wessex and Viking is donating £2 for every week booked to "The Waterways Trust Green Fund", set up by the firm and backed by Britsh Waterways, to invest in low carbon technologies and environmental projects.

UK boat hire is also encouraging holidaymakers to voluntarily donate £ 5 per car used to travel to and from their boat."What better than to experience the slower pace of life on the historic waterways with a clear conscience that you are enjoying one of the greenest holidays", says Edward Helps, MD of UK Boat Hire.

To demonstrate boat holidays' green credentials, UK boat hire has produced a factsheet showing that while a return plane journey from London to Mallorca produces 1,146 tinnes of CO2 per person, a week on a narrowboat generates a mere 0.059 tonnes.

The company also says that it will donate an extra £20 to the fund for every holiday booked quoting this Canal Boat story.
