In Yorkshire, the Leeds and Liverpool canal passes through the grand unspoilt
Pennine scenery, and many waterway marvels such as the Bingley Five Rise
locks.
Three canals cross the Pennines , each with its own character, but all showing the determination of two centuries ago to get goods moving across the hills and build prosperity. In the middle of the last century, before the leisure revolution came to the canals, two of these were sadly closed, but now they have been reopened. Today you can see their history all around as you travel, but also how the West Riding is adapting to 21st century life.
Our base is among the newly restored warehouses of Sowerby Bridge Wharf is ideally situated for exploring all three canals.
The Rochdale canal is only recently restored and climbs up the
Calder valley to a magnificient summit over the Pennines.
Other highlights
of the area are the fine castle at Skipton and the Royal Armouries Museum
in Leeds.
