Llangollen & Montgomery Canals
Best for astounding canal architecture and tranquillity.
This 46 mile canal is arguably the most beautiful in Britain and is certainly one of the most popular. the scenery from the English border deep into the heart of north and central Wales varies from isolated sheep pastures to ancient peat mosses, past tree lined lakes to the foothills of Snowdonia, and includes the breathtaking engineering feats of Pontcysylte and Chirck aqueducts.
Connected to the Llangollen Canal is the lesser known but very rewarding 38 mile Montgomery Canal. Historic interest is provided by the locks and the old warehouses. And because access to the canal is controlled, there are only a limited number of boats on the length at any one time.
While not yet completely restored to its former length, volunteers continue to work towards full restoration.
